Your health information is for your eyes only

Two hospitals in Bethesda are now using a photograph of a patient’s iris as a form of patient identification, both inpatient and outpatient, to safeguard against identity theft and reduce medical errors caused by patient misidentification. The program is part of a platform called RightPatient, which focuses on biometric technology to protect patient information. Cybersecurity continues to be a concern in this digital medical age and it is quite appropriate to use the eyes, the windows to our souls, to safeguard patient’s identities. How this extends to other aspects of our lives (passports, credit cards, safety deposit boxes), one can only imagine.
