“Pay Patients, Save Money”: Rewarding Patients for choosing cost-effective healthcare

NPR recently aired an episode of its podcast “Planet Money” in which they describe a new health insurance company called SmartShopper. SmartShopper tells patients the cost of laboratory tests or procedures within their network, and if they choose a cost-effective option, they can qualify for a cash reward. Providing this incentive to patients to search for cost-effective care is a great way to motivate providers to reduce costs, however it is important to ensure that these cost-effective options are also delivering good quality of care.
