Telemedicine Prompts Lobbying to Reform State-Specific Nurse Licensure

With the rise of telemedicine and ability for nurses to work remotely, some hospitals and nurse groups are lobbying state legislatures across the country to reform and expand the multi-state nurse “compact,” which began in 1999.  Opponents, chiefly other nursing unions, argue that this would both threaten patient safety given state-specific differences in licensing standards as well as decrease nurse group autonomy by allowing hospitals to break nurse strikes with out-of-state nurses.
