American Optometry Association Petitions FDA to Ban Online Vision Test Company

Opternative, which was founded by an ophthalmologist, offers free 25-minute online vision tests with the option to then pay $40 for a prescription.  The American Optometry Association has succeeded in blocking the company in 5 states and is now petitioning the FDA to ban it nationally, claiming that this test may not give accurate prescriptions and misses the opportunity to screen for ophthalmologic conditions.  Opternative’s website bases the accuracy of its test solely on the results of a 30 patient trial.
