Digital pill tracking has been proposed for a number of different reasons. Elderly patients could use a digital pill system for medication reminders and to help them take the medication correctly. Pill tracking could be used for patients who have complicated regimens, ie. for tuberculosis who need external monitoring for compliance. Recently, the FDA approved, Abilify MyCite, a version of the antipsychotic aripiprazole with a digital sensor that generates an electric signal after contacting stomach acid that is received by a patch worn by the patient. This article outlines the discussion over the uses, benefits, and drawbacks to digital pill usage, especially in patients with mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar disorder.
